Is sociopathy the modality of the age? Civilian casualties = Bugsplat

AP / Adem Hadei

An Iraqi woman takes her dead son into her arms. The 6-year-old was killed on the way home from enrolling for his first year of school.

U.S. military has developed new software that more accurately predicts the impact of a bomb . . . named “Bugsplat”

  1. Hi PW!

You can find several statements regarding this in the book.

For example, on page 119, Peck says, “Evil [is] defined as the use of power to destroy the spiritual growth of others for the purpose of defending and preserving the integrity of our own sick selves. In short, it is scapegoating.”

    Here’s a longer quote from page 162:

Mental health requires that the human will submit itself to something higher than itself. To function decently in this world we must submit ourselves to some principle that takes precedence over what we might want at any given moment…[I]f they are sane, even the nonreligious submit themselves…to some “higher power”…As I defined it in The Road Less Traveled,* “Mental health is an ongoing process of dedication to reality at all costs.”

    And on page 264:

Then how is it that psychiatrists have until now failed to recognize such a distinct, rigid type [referring to the evil personality]? It is because they have bought the pretense of respectability. They have been deceived by what Harvey [sic] M. Cleckley called “the mask of sanity”…Despite their pretense of sanity, the evil are the most insane of all.

    Hope this helps.

  2. …See this:
“Imperial Priorities: Obedience First, Character Last”

    …and then this:
    “The Permanent Dehumanizing of Humanity?”

It took me about a half hour to be able to breathe again after watching the video linked to footnote 3 of Young’s article. Even if this video were only a joke, like Borat, it’s not joking.

Whether it’s foreign oil or cheap discount crap, anyone in the way of getting to it is just an ant underfoot.

    • Hi DS, thanks for the comment. Changing the subject however, perhaps you could help me track down a Scott Peck quote. I know you are a fan of his People of the Lie, I misplaced (or loaned) my copy years ago. He said something to the effect that sane people are wedded to reality no matter the cost, while the insane are wedded to their false constructs no matter the cost. Just on the off chance I was wondering if you knew of this quote or where I could find it. Thanks.
