Obviously you are not sure he/she is a sociopath.  That knowledge is an ‘awareness’ not a ‘knowness’, if that makes any sense.  One recognizes sociopaths emotionally at a soul deep level.  Once you realize (assuming it’s true) that every emotion of your partner was a calculated and staged fraud you will be set free forever.

From the comments:

Becca:

I am so sad that my world of associates continues to dwindle because of the subtle words, set ups and comparisons to unlikable TV/Movie characters that my soon to be ex husband continues to make about me when around others.

He trashed my reputation to such lengths that I don’t even know where to even begin to try and 1) show these people that I am not the person he is making me out to be.  . . .

I would appreciate something that may work. His behaviors and tall tales are also having an effect on my son’s social life too. I am an attractive person, a caring nice person, have always been popular and well liked. People that don’t have any idea who I am hate me because of my ex husband. He has done this to me even before we were divorcing. But now it has begun and taken hold in my new town and school district. What can I do? Something please !

Larry:

@ Becca …

I know the sadness all too well. I only know a fraction of what has been said about my life and character, but those who do know the lies will never tell. I came to the conclusion after believing I could spread the truth about me that it was all too late. Those people, even family members, didn’t want to listen to me. In the eyes of many, I am an true outcast.

I eventually came to terms with what I was faced with, and instead of taking the route of continually being so depressed and not achieving anything positive, I accepted I had to let go, and erase them from my life. That included my two daughters.

In my experience, I’ve never heard a victim turn things around, though I would hope it’s happened. That has the effect of taking you down, but do not let it. Come to peace with your life and future, and the new people you will meet.

Well that’s depressing.  Why are these character assassinations so believed, that the victim himself is never told the accusations?  Amazing.  The effects are not small, the victim’s life is absolutely devastated.

From another comment, David:

Believe me moving away does not help to much, because I believe what people go through you still live with it. I to have the same problem. The whole thing of just turning off. When I wake up everything that has happened to me starts all over again. I think about it every moment. I make bad decisions because of what’s on my mind. There are times, when I too can’t get a breath in.

It not only extends through every moment of the victim’s life, but extends outward.  The victim’s stress is brought home to their family.  Marriages founder.  Divorces result.  The victim’s preoccupation (or spreading cancer of anxiety) distorts the victim’s judgement, and causes the victim to miss cues from others, sometimes important ones.  Sleep is hard, activated anxiety centers never go to sleep.

Imagine what Becca must have felt in her new town as she felt it all happening again.  Her silent screams as though she were on thin ice watching the cracks seek her out, following her from her past locations, powerless to affect or stop them.  Or perhaps she felt she was being pursued by ghosts that could strike her at will, but that she could neither see nor defend against.

We are all social animals.  We need secure communities of friends and believe we have them.  Victims of psychopathic character assassination know that is not true.  For them, what was once solid ground becomes a thin crust over a sea of acid.  They never know when a footfall will break through.

It should be pointed out that the psychopath’s aim is murder, murder by suicide.

The daisy chain of evil has to be broken.  Or perhaps a better metaphor would be the paper cutout doll chain needs to be broken lest it unfold into infinity, damaging all it touches.

But no one helps.  The psychopath’s whispering campaign is absolutely and totally believed.  The victim is almost never even told, ‘the word on the street about you is . . . ., thought you should know.’  Sad.

August 10, 2015:  I am simply stunned that no one has ever communicated the character assassination allegations against myself.  I once offered a woman who, from one day to the next, turned her head to the wall rather than say hello to me (and we had been workplace friends for years – this pattern happened repeatedly but slowly over the years, the psychopathic perp couldn’t risk my inner circle telling me), a hundred dollars if she (or her husband if she preferred) would tell me the whyfor.  Plenty of people who know me read this blog.  Comments can be totally anonymous.  There is no need to fill out any identifying field.  Further to protect their IP address, if desired, anyone can simply go to a copy center or internet cafe.  Comments are moderated so it is a private communication.  If preferred there are also many free and anonymous email account providers.  I just don’t get it.  Where’s the downside?  I would help and have helped others in similar situations.

From Oct. 4, 2010:  https://pathwhisperer.wordpress.com/2010/10/04/that-flavor-of-sociopathy-%E2%80%94-current-stories-in-the%C2%A0news/

Rutgers freshman is presumed dead in suicide after roommate broadcast gay sexual encounter online

A Rutgers University freshman [Tyler Clementi] appears to have killed himself by jumping off the George Washington Bridge after his roommate broadcast live images of the 18-year-old having a sexual encounter with another man on the internet, according to campus and law enforcement sources.  . .  .

Dharun Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro, and Molly Wei, 18, of Princeton, were charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy for setting up a camera in a dorm room on Sept. 19 and using it to view and transmit a live sex scene, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan.

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/09/hold_new_rutgers_post.html

It seems likely that Dharun Ravi is a sociopath who thought he was just pulling off a “goof.”  I doubt he comprehended the violation of what he was doing.  I also doubt that he would have felt violated if that had been done to him as sociopathic sexuality is so primitive no privacy is needed.

It is also possible that he was a “good guy sociopath”, not meaning any harm, just seeking a few laughs.  However, this would not be true if he doesn’t accept his fault and error here.  “Good guy sociopaths” do exist, who actually aren’t evil — though obviously the result of his choices was evil.

Unfortunately, in today’s world, sociopaths no longer feel constrained.  In addition to the widespread depiction of sociopathic behavior in popular culture which sociopaths seem to feel licenses their own behavior, there is also the example of modern technological invasions of privacy and surveillance (ISPs keeping track of clients, Google databases, Facebook, etc.).  I believe sociopaths pay attention to all of this in determining what is acceptable behavior.

It completely ignores the existence of psychopaths/sociopaths.

Psychopaths have different brains, they are like a subspecies.  A societal or warfare/strife analysis that ignores their presence is nursery school level analysis.

What kind of capitalism, what kind of banksterism destroys families to the point of giving up their children? (The quote in the title is from http://occupywallst.org/forum/children-dumped-in-streets-by-greek-parents-who-ca/.)  The psychopathic kind.

See “Psychopaths Caused the Financial Crisis … And They Will Do It Again and Again Unless They Are Removed From Power” https://pathwhisperer.wordpress.com/2012/01/04/psychopaths-caused-the-financial-crisis-and-they-will-do-it-again-and-again-unless-they-are-removed-from-power/.

From Forum Post: Know you enemy – Bank Criminal Gangsters are Narcissists , posted by OccupyLink:

I prefer the term psychopath. We are not all one human family, we are not all brothers and sisters under the skin. Psychopaths have a different brain structure, they are human alternates.

. . . . . .

Narcissists are ill, psychopaths are true to their nature. Fighting crime, corruption and evil without reference to (and a separate response for) psychopaths is like fighting with both hands tied behind one’s back.

It’s not accidental that we are at this turn in history. We’ve been blind to the predators in our midst too long.

From 2008, but nothing’s changed: https://pathwhisperer.wordpress.com/2008/10/11/welcome-to-our-sociopaths-gone-wild-economy/ ; https://pathwhisperer.wordpress.com/2008/09/24/commonalities-between-wall-street-speculators-andor-fed-bankers-and-sociopaths/ . Far from being reined in, Wall St. sociopaths are even more in control.

Obviously individuals are punished for crimes not for what they are. Most psychopaths (but not all) are persuadable, concerning following laws and societal norms, through educated self interest or utilitarianism. But it is disastrous to ignore their presence.

. . . . . .

Wow! Is this a joke or are you for real? Assuming the latter, thanks for writing in and illustrating bankster criminal psychopathy.

Since you are into sharing, could you have your brain scanned and share the results with us?

I could tell you that the lowest IQ of a Wall Street trader would still be 50% higher than the average IQ of a OWS protester

That’s delusional, but I’ll humor you. Would that license you to frontrun the market?

Wall St./the financial services sector is just that, a service sector. If you look at a national economy as one business, it’s not even a profit center. But it has become parasitic on the larger (real) economy. Understanding this is probably beyond your limited intellectual capabilities.

You looters are destroying the world economy. Thanks for the depression you’ve given the U.S. and the world.

Obviously I am not the only one aware of the danger of sociopaths in the financial industry. From Forum Post: Occupy Psychopaths 1 (OWS vs. the Pathology of the 1%), (mine)

“An Occupy Wall Street Activist [a Mr. PinkWhiteBlack]  explains why he thinks its very important to spread knowledge about psychopaths and psychopathy. Find out about the important connection between psychopaths and the ruling 1%:

“So basically the reason I come down here every so often is that I’m trying to spread information about psychopathy. I think it has an over-arching impact on why people are down here camping out, and why the financial industry and the government really doesn’t care about the people anymore. These people are about 1-5% of the population and they have no concept of empathy, remorse, guilt, conscience – they’re just not biologically capable of it. They’ve shown this in fMRI studies and there’s been a lot of actual hard science that proves the point that their totally different from normal humans.””

. . . . . .

pathwhisperer

It’s more subtle than that [in reply to the comment that psychopaths are insane]. Psychopaths are clever chameleons, hiding their true nature. Technically they are not insane but true to their own nature.

. . . . . .

Anachronism

I believe we are misdiagnosing the sociopathy/psychopathy of the “1%” as steeming from some innate biology rather than modern socioeconomic structures.

I think it is both. If corporations are allowed the freedom to be sociopathic, sociopaths will and do rise to the top — they don’t have the “problem” of a conscience and the “friction” it induces. Our current socioeconomic structures draw them forward.

I have no idea what percentage of the 1% is in fact sociopathic, but even a limited number can act as a “bad seed” in influencing corruption.

Fighting crime, corruption and evil without any reference to sociopathy is like fighting with both hands tied behind one’s back. It seems we never make inroads on sex trafficking, child prostitution, illicit organ transplant rings, etc. Sociopaths laugh at our laws.

Wow, great to see this post. Lobaczewski’s (and others, it was a saga) “Political Ponerology: A Science on The Nature of Evil adjusted for Political Purposes” is one of the great books of history. It is a scientific study of the development of pathocracies (governments under the control of evil individuals and movements).

Hi whatishumanity, I notice the comments are all your own. The topic of psychopaths in control of power seems to be too big for most people to wrap their heads around. I’ve seen this many, many times.

. . . . . .

Blaming the victim is their specialty. They still want to blame unqualified buyers for the worldwide economic crash, these buyers weren’t even to blame for the mortgage meltdown. Mortgage backed securities were the cause, they supposedly freed the brokers from risk. The brokers then went out vacuuming up any buyers.

The crash has been caused by untramelled greed and the creation and fraudulent selling of “risk free” financial “products”, out of control derivatives, bubble economics, etc. — they actually thought they had beaten the business cycle and had created a risk free capitalism by securitizing everything and thus diluting the risk.

Nothing structural has changed since 2008. The banks are even more too big to fail, derivatives are even more out of control. We still have a casino economy designed by sociopaths who think they can’t lose.

In terms of people not realizing what they’re up against, everybody seems to think that sociopaths only fool the other guy, not them.

. . . . . .

From Forum Post: All activists should work at recognizing sociopaths (nowadays called anti-social personality disorder) (mine):

“[L]et me list some traits to keep in mind. Look for (in no particular order) any or all of the following: a Zelig like ability to be all things to all people, an incredible ability to inveigle themselves into the good graces of authority figures, individuals for whom the phrase two-sided is a vast underestimation, a delight in causing discord through subtle puppet mastery, a vast and deep irresponsibility, an “eggshell” type personality which is always threatening to respond in childish anger if thwarted, and as always both a deep arrogance with no discernible cause and an extreme talent at eliciting pity. Some of these insights may come in “a blinding flash” — you should pay attention to them. Of course some of these traits are not unique to sociopaths, however in sociopaths they have a “unique flavor” which I think will become evident after recognizing the first few sociopaths.” https://pathwhisperer.wordpress.com/2009/02/18/items-of-interest-some-recent-some-not-so-some-that-suggest-possible-sociopathy-some-that-scream-it/

So do you want to come in from the cold with your own ‘we’re here and we’re queer’ type declaration, maybe ‘we’re here and we’re non-empathic sociopathic’?  Or do you want to loose a fatal flu bug?

As background for this post, please see “It [sociopathy] is human biodiversity like homosexuality”.  A commenter both declared him/herself a dissocial and also said “we’d do fine without you [empathic normals].”  His/her desires seem split.

Robert Hare, PhD, was invited to cover sociopathy on several TV shows.  However he turned it down, saying it would have been a circus.  His own comments are no longer online, however Robert Herzc (on Hare’s site) had this to say:

He’s been asked to be a guest on Oprah (twice), 60 Minutes, and Larry King Live. Oprah wanted him alongside a psychopath and his victim. “I said, ‘This is a circus,’ ” Hare says. “I couldn’t do that.” 60 Minutes also wanted to “make it sexy” by throwing real live psychopaths into the mix.

http://www.hare.org/links/saturday.html

It’s a pity that he didn’t take them up on this.  It would seem that the producers sought to feature the seeming normalness of the psychopaths.  (I should note that Herzc’s entire article is well worth reading.)

Meanwhile over in Holland.

A virus with the potential to kill up to half the world’s population has been made in a lab. Now academics and bioterrorism experts are arguing over whether to publish the recipe, and whether the research should have been done in the first place.

The virus is an H5N1 bird flu strain which was genetically altered to become much more contagious. It was created by Ron Fouchier of the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, who first presented his work to the public at an influenza conference in Malta in September.  http://rt.com/news/bird-flu-killer-strain-119/

Sure.  It may take a while though.  It’s a recovering from PTSD process.  I don’t think there is any question that this searcher is in post traumatic shock.  There is a lot to deal with:  disappointment, betrayal, shock that such people exist.  The fairy tale world of “everyone is a brother and sister underneath the skin” is gone forever.  In addition there is often self disappointment and self betrayal.

The last two particularly if the victim betrayed individual(s) that he/she loved, in getting wrapped up in the con.   Such victims are left bewildered by their own choices in the absence of the active con — they simply don’t know why they did what they did.  They can spend years in a state of confusion and mourning — not able to understand their actions and emotionally keeping the flame alive of the relationship they destroyed, never emotionally letting go of the old flame.

Someone recovering from sociopathic victimization may be greatly helped by finding a talk therapist.  However the therapist needs to understand the situation (and believe in sociopaths, therapists actually have less experience with sociopaths than the rest of us).  This searcher does not need to discuss mom and dad and his/her childhood.

Sam Antar says it all.  Whom he calls criminals, I call sociopaths.

[Sam Antar] was one of the criminal masterminds behind New York’s famous Crazy Eddie scam. He was a CPA, and he was the CFO of Crazy Eddie, and he readily admits to securities fraud, skimming, money laundering through a technique he calls the “Panama Pump”, and a variety of other crimes. He’s a convicted felon.

The above blog also had a comment worth noting:

Wall Street leaders now understand that they made a mistake, one born of their innocent and trusting nature. They trusted ordinary Americans to behave more responsibly than they themselves ever would, and these ordinary Americans betrayed their trust.

Bwah, ha, ha, ha, ha.   Bwah, ha, ha.  Or am I slow, is he being ironic?

I’m bringing this post back — it’s been a while, also there happen to be multiple searches today for Thomas Capano.

Obviously I think they are.  It’s why I write this blog. From my Mission Statement:  [My aim is] to share information about sociopathy and sociopathic behavior in everyday life. “It’s as though there’s a dangerous fish in all the waters of the world, that is never mentioned”  https://pathwhisperer.wordpress.com/about/.

To the best of my knowledge, the term SAPs originated with Roger Canup.

In the last section I pointed out that the problem of plausible lies is the most serious problem facing humanity today. I will now discuss the people who have been telling plausible lies: the Socially Adept Psychopaths or S.A.Ps (pronounced SAPS) of the world. An example of S.A.P. thought processes is in order.

Most people have heard of Ted Bundy; the serial killer who was executed in Florida several years ago. Not many people are aware of the fact that Bundy was studying to become a prosecutor, and that eventually he hoped to become a judge. Those that do know that fact see it as some strangely ironic twist – an inexplicable quirk in Bundy’s bizarre makeup. It never seems to occur to most people that the perfect place for a psychopathic serial killer to hide in society is as a prosecutor or a judge; but I assure you that it occurs to the Psychopaths of the world. I would estimate that about 10% of the prosecutors and judges in the United States are in fact, S.A.Ps. The ONLY difference between them and Ted Bundy is that they were able to control outward signs of their Psychopathy until they achieved their goal of being in a position of authority.

http://users.hal-pc.org/~rcanup/sap.html.

For most of their lives Thomas Capano and Ira Einhorn passed as SAPs and led seemingly responsible lives — it was only the insult to the ego of a lover leaving and the subsequent murder of same that exposed them.

Thomas Capano
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Capano

Ira Einhorn
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ira_Einhorn

If their girlfriends, who they ended up murdering, and victims of other psychopaths had known enough about sociopathy to suspect it, perhaps they wouldn’t have gone back one last time, or gone back alone to retrieve their belongings, or tried to do the right thing and explain why they were leaving in person, or tried to stay just friends, or agreed to meet in private, etc.  In my opinion, it’s incredibly irresponsible of law enforcement and the media not to inform the public about sociopathic criminals.

Brain Scans Show Abnormalities In Psychopaths

Adrian Raine’s “successful” psychopaths are essentially the same as SAPs.

In the study of the hippocampus, the research team [led by Adrian Raine of USC] expanded the scope of previous studies by comparing the brains of two groups for the first time: “successful” psychopaths – those who had committed crimes but had never been caught – and “unsuccessful” psychopaths – those who had been caught.
. . .
The difference between successful psychopaths (those who avoid getting arrested) and unsuccessful psychopaths is that the more successful ones have a greater ability to learn fear of getting caught and to therefore guide their own behavior to minimize the chances of getting caught.
. . .
“There’s faulty wiring going on in psychopaths. They’re wired differently than other people,” Raine said. “In a way, it’s literally true in this case.”

He found that the psychopaths’ corpus callosums were an average of 23 percent larger and 7 percent longer than the control groups’.
. . .

With an increased corpus callosum came less remorse, fewer emotions and less social connectedness – the classic hallmarks of a psychopath, he said.

“These people don’t react. They don’t care,” Raine said. “Why that occurs, we don’t fully know, but we are beginning to get important clues from neuro-imaging research.”
