Posts Tagged ‘psychopath’

Here are the searches I’ve been found by.  I find it interesting what people search for regarding sociopathy, perhaps it will interest others.  By far the most interest are in the spectacular criminal sociopaths such as Rodney Alcala, Michael Swango, Stacey Castor, etc.  Perhaps because they appear so human, but their behavior is so alien.  I don’t know for sure, however, these visitors don’t usually ask questions.  I’m always happy to expand a post by spelling out “flags of possible sociopathy” if commenters wish me to.

It’s also apparent that many people are in court with sociopaths.  Also quite a few are dealing with being blackmailed.

One area I’m surprised by is the number of searches regarding pseudologia fantastica.  I believe these people are rare, as opposed to sociopaths — at any rate I’ve only known two (that I know of) while I’ve known tens of sociopaths (as have all middle-aged readers of these words).

First let me note that “nonhuman human” is not a phrase I use lightly or would apply to all psychopaths.  However it certainly applies to psychopathic murderers of their own families.

Emily Bazelon:

Two decades ago, Janet Malcolm published “The Journalist and the Murderer,” her classic story of the story of a murder trial. Her subject was the relationship between the writer Joe McGinniss and the Army doctor Jeffrey MacDonald, who gave McGinniss full access to his defense team when he stood trial for the death of his wife and children — and then discovered that over years of apparent friendship, McGinniss was writing a future best seller portraying MacDonald as a psychopathic killer.   In her brilliant dissection of this betrayal, Malcolm exposed the “morally indefensible” nature of the work of her journalistic tribe.  http://franciscovazbrasil.blogspot.com/2011/05/janet-malcolms-cross-examinations-by.html

This is total nonsense, Jeffrey MacDonald was seeking to play, use, manipulate (user whatever word you want) the author Joe McGinniss.  He was propelled by his psychopathic level arrogance and optimism (a mentally ill level of optimism is a flag of psychopathy, see Ronald Reagan).  Joe McGinniss owed him nothing.

I’m afraid these Silly Sallies don’t appreciate the reality of the situation.  I can only conclude that they (together or separately) are murderer groupies (these are the women who show up at murder trials, write letters to serial killers, etc. propelled by a psychotic unwillingness to accept reality, all males for them are ‘tall, strong and gentle, just like Dad’ — the truth is too threatening to their world), or devotees of a particular psychopath (cultlike followers and true believers taken in by a psychopath), or children of a psychopathic father (who never meet a psychopath they don’t love), or psychopaths themselves (who can’t stand to see a psychopath taken down by non-psychopaths).

Joe McGinniss:

In 1989, the New Yorker published a two-part article by Janet Malcolm entitled “The Journalist and the Murderer.”

In the article, which was published in book form a year later, Malcolm offered her skewed perception of my relationship with Jeffrey MacDonald–the subject of my 1983 book, Fatal Vision–to support her bizarre hypothesis that “Every journalist…knows that what he does is morally indefensible.” So numerous and egregious were Malcolm’s omissions, distortions and outright misstatements of fact that I felt compelled to set the record straight in an epilogue to the updated edition of Fatal Vision that was published in 1989.

There is no statute of limitations on truth. Even now, twenty-two years later, Malcolm’s fictions ought not to be accepted uncritically. I reprint my 1989 response to her here.

This is a question I’ve pondered considerably.  My provisional answer is yes they do.  However I think they think everyone else is lying also.  For them this includes surgeons, pilots, tattoo artists and other highly trained specialists.  But this would mean that there is no hard reality to them, reality isn’t really real — it’s plastic and responsive to emotional wish.  From the research (A. Raine’s comes to mind) it seems their brains are radically different.

They are one of the few psychopathic subsets that I consider mentally ill and deserving of confinement in mental hospitals — not to cure them, which can’t be done, but to protect society.

Five Reasons To Be Concerned Your Husband Is A Psychopath

It dawned on me a few years ago that our rational lives are like a still pond and madness is the jagged rock thrown into it, creating odd ripples everywhere. And the most powerful madness of all, when it comes to the way the world turns, is psychopathy.

There’s a consensus amongst psychologists that psychopaths — with all their glib charm and grandiosity and the power to effortlessly manipulate — do brilliantly in business and politics.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jon-ronson/five-reasons-to-be-concer_1_b_861092.html

The author, Jon Ronson, goes on to list five traits as possible signs of psychopathy:

1. He was very gallant when you first met him, not so gallant now
2. He’s grandiose
3. He Had Early Behavioral Problems
4. He Engages In Promiscuous Sexual Behavior
, and finally
5. He Spends too Much Time Learning How To Spot Psychopaths By Using the Hare Checklist

Why is number five there?  This suspicion is extremely damaging.  It actually leads to self-censorship by non-psychopaths.  Friends and acquaintances think my ‘fascination with psychopaths’ is very odd.  That makes no sense to me.  They are out there and you need to understand them.

The status quo (thankfully now changing) is similar (as I’ve written elsewhere) to there being a dangerous fish in all the waters of the world that is never mentioned.  That is insane and a failure of each generation to the following generations.

I believe the author’s point five encourages the public to hide their heads in the sand and works at cross purposes with his other points.  Why?

One thing I’ve noticed about female psychopaths is their complete and total lack of self doubt, they never seem to imagine the possibility of losing, of being seen through.  It’s uncanny — an utter and complete belief in their alternate reality.  One doesn’t usually think of psychopaths as being insane, but female psychopaths of this caliber and pseudologues certainly qualify.

Stacey Castor — nonhuman human, to stop the collapse of her defense against having killed her husband with antifreeze, she poisoned her daughter, framing her with a fake suicide note confessing to the father’s murder.

Black Widow Murderer , Stacey Castor

She was charged with intentionally poisoning her husband David Castor with antifreeze in 2005 and attempting to poison her daughter Ashley Wallace with a toxic cocktail made of crushed pills , vodka , orange juice and sprite. In addition she is suspected of murdering her first husband Michael Wallace

Officials: Man persuaded moms to abuse kids

He allegedly convinced the parents to send him images of the sexual attacks

A Michigan man posed as a psychologist and persuaded mothers across the country to sexually assault their children as a form of therapy, then send him the images of the attacks, authorities said Monday.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41835123/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts

Another article:

Man pleads guilty to duping moms into abusing kids

In real life, Steven Demink didn’t have children, a college degree or a lasting career. Online, prosecutors say, he presented himself as Dalton St. Clair, an attractive single father and psychologist — a fantasy image authorities say the Michigan man used to persuade mothers across the country to commit unspeakable acts on their children.

Demink, 41, of Redford Township, preyed on single mothers for more than a year, prosecutors say, convincing them to sexually assault their children as a form of therapy. After pleading guilty Monday to six charges related to the sexual exploitation of children, Demink faces 15 years to life in prison when he is sentenced in June.

http://www.centurylink.net/news/read.php?id=18356060&ps=1011&srce=news_class&action=1&lang=en&_LT=HOME_USNWC00L1_UNEWS&page=1

The discussions in the forums where I found this story were very hard on the mothers involved, quite a few of whom have been sentenced themselves.  I don’t wish to get into that conversation other than to say that they were up against an alien level of manipulative ability and quite possibly an alien level of intelligence.

It’s a disappointment that neither article mentioned sociopathy or psychopathy, this seems to be the bizarre norm for the media.  Steven Demink should be isolated for the remainder of this life.  Unfortunately he will probably be paroled well before serving his whole sentence.

In a responsible world he would be transferred from the jail to a mental hospital at the end of his sentence.  At this level of sociopathy, he is only human in form and in the biology of his structure.  His attorney is quoted as saying, “It’s a shame he couldn’t ask for help.”  That fantasy is a profound and common misunderstanding of the reality of sociopathy.

Oxdrover, at the Lovefraud blog, wrote a book review of “The 48 Laws of Power,”  http://www.lovefraud.com/blog/2010/12/29/book-review-the-48-laws-of-power/.  Please visit the complete post for her commentary and visitors’ comments.

I recently bought a book entitled, The 48 Laws of Power, by Robert Greene, because it sounded like an interesting book. But the more I got into it, I realized that the heretofore-thought-mythical “Psychopathic Play book” does exist, and this is it!

Robert Greene, by the way, also wrote The Art of Seduction.

Here’s what the jacket blurb on the back of The 48 Laws of Power says about its content:

“The best-selling book for those who want POWER, watch POWER, or want to arm themselves against POWER. Amoral, cunning, ruthless and instructive, this piercing work distills three thousand years of the history of power into forty-eight well explicated laws. As attention-grabbing in its design as in its content, this bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, Carol Von Clausewitz and other great thinkers. Some laws require prudence, some stealth, some total absence of mercy, but like it or not, all have applications in real-life situations. Illustrated through the tactics of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry Kissinger, P. T. Barnum, and other famous figures who have wielded, or been victimized by power, these laws will fascinate any reader interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control.”

The 48 laws are listed in the contents

Law 1: Never outshine the master

Law 2: Never put too much trust in friends, learn how to use enemies

Law 3: Conceal your intentions

Law 4: Always say less than necessary

Law 5: So much depends on reputation—guard it with your life

Law 6: Court attention at all cost

Law 7: Get others to do the work for you, but always take the credit

Law 8: Make other people come to you—use bait if necessary

Law 9: Win through your actions, never through argument

Law 10: Infection: avoid the unhappy and unlucky

Law 11: Learn to keep people dependent on you

Law 12: Use selective honesty and generosity to disarm your victim

Law 13: When asking for help, appeal to people’s self-interest, never to their mercy or gratitude

Law 14: Pose as a friend, work as a spy

Law 15: Crush your enemy totally

Law 16: Use absence to increase respect and honor

Law 17: Cultivate an air of unpredictability

Law 18: Do not built fortresses to protect yourself, isolation is dangerous

Law 19: Know who you’re dealing with—do not offend the wrong person

Law 20: Do not commit to anyone

Law 21: Play a sucker to catch a sucker—seem dumber than your mark

Law 22: Use the surrender tactic: Transform weakness into power

Law 23: Concentrate your forces

Law 24: Play the perfect courtier

Law 25: Re-create yourself

Law 26: Keep your hands clean

Law 27: Play on people’s need to believe to create a cult-like following

Law 28: Enter action with boldness

Law 29: Play all the way to the end

Law 30: Make your accomplishments seem effortless

Law 31: Control the options: Get others to play with the cards you deal

Law 32: Play to people’s fantasies

Law 33: Discover each man’s thumb screw

Law 34:Be royal in your own fashion: Act like a king to be treated like a king

Law 35: Master the art of timing

Law 36: Disdain things you cannot have: Ignoring them is the best revenge

Law 37: Create compelling spectacles

Law 38: Think as you like but behave like others

Law 39: Stir up waters to catch fish

Law 40: Despise the free lunch

Law 41: Avoid stepping into a great man’s shoes

Law 42 Strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter

Law 43: Work on the hearts and minds of others

Law 44: Disarm and infuriate with the mirror effect

Law 45: Preach the need for change, but never reform too much at once

Law 46: Never appear too perfect

Law 47: Do not go past the mark you aimed for; in victory, learn when to stop

Law 48: Assume formlessness

Perfect advice for psychopaths

The preface of the book gets right down to business:

“No one wants less power, everyone wants more … in the world today,  however, it is dangerous to seem too power hungry, to be overt with your power moves. We have to seem fair and decent. So we need to be subtle—congenial yet cunning, democratic, yet devious.

This game of constant duplicity most resembles the power dynamic that existed in the scheming world of the old aristocratic court(s).”

The author, Greene, then goes on to perfectly describe the psychopath’s ways, without naming him such “…those who make a show or display of innocence are the least innocent of all.” What else but a psychopath could “recognize…by the way they flaunt their moral qualities, their piety, their exquisite sense of justice … but (they) are merely throwing dust in our eyes distracting us from their power plays with their air of moral superiority….you will see they are often the ones most skillful at indirect manipulation, …and they greatly resent any publicizing of the tactics they use.”

. . .

The most personally disturbing part of the book was one in which he was discussing the siege of Troy, and he said, “Image: The Trojan Horse. Your guile is hidden inside a magnificent gift that proves irresistible to your opponent. The walls open. Once inside, wreak havoc.”

We must learn to protect ourselves from those power-players who have no conscience, the power players who will use calculated acts of kindness or proffered gifts to earn our trust. Selective kindness can be the biggest part of the arsenal of deception. “Aimed for the heart, it corrodes the will to fight back.”

Robert Greene

A little arrogant, no?

Ah Lovefraud — the gift to the lazy blogger.  “Borrowing” from a post, the above quote is from LETTERS TO LOVEFRAUD  ‘O like Umbrella,’ and the shut down mechanism.  I’d like to focus on a few passages here and there (emphases added).  Please visit the original for the full context, it’s written by Quest, a 55 year old male after the disaster of a relationship with a psychopath.

Two weeks after leaving I realised that I was now damaged goods.  Many times I found myself asking myself, what had this woman done to me and how did she do it??? . . .

So what were my symptoms?  . . .  I was in a state of awareness that I can only describe as being hypervigilant for other psychopaths, or the possibility of them. Basically everyone I met was a potential psychopath until proven otherwise. Paranoia was rampant.

As time passed. I learned how to see psychopaths. It was as if a sixth sense had been awakened and I was wired to the symptoms of psychopathy. Any symptom set the alarm bells ringing in my mind. Well, all this knowledge and awareness was great, but I still could not fix the damage. . . .

. . .

Anyone who has spent any time in an intimate relationship with a psychopath knows that things get very confusing at times. What appears to happen to the victim is a kind of mental shut down that seems to happen at a subconscious level, beyond the normal conscious awareness of the victim. The victim, not realising what is happening, slowly gets lulled into an almost vegetative state where they can hardly recognise themselves. It feels like their very essence or soul has been sucked right out of them, leaving a confused, rudderless entity, almost a zombie.

. . .

The victim tries to make sense of what is going on around them. What they don’t realise is, nothing is supposed to make sense. The psychopath is in full attack mode on the victim’s sanity. The psychopath is basically talking nonsense, but the victim is not aware that it is nonsense, or that they are under premeditated attack. As the victim’s mind tries to make sense of the babble, not realising that its not supposed to make sense, because it almost does make sense, some part of the persons thinking processes shuts down. How this really works I am not sure, but I feel as if I am getting close to the realisation of it.

. . .

If it doesn’t make sense it’s probably nonsense and you are probably dealing with a psychopath. Because a psychopath is so good at hiding nonsense in amongst sense, most people miss the nonsense. Being aware of this puts the power in the hands of the victim or potential victim. . . .

So gaslighting shuts the victim down mentally. I feel it is important to realise this, because once a victim is shut down, it will take a long time to wake them up again. I guess the revelation here is realising the relationship between gaslighting and the shut down mechanism. It’s all in the nonsense.

Apparently he developed the ability to ‘see psychopaths.’  I once knew a woman, a coworker, who claimed to be able to do this.  She said that while standing at street corners waiting to cross she’d start recognizing the psychopaths around her.  She said they were all over.  Concerning coworkers that she claimed to be psychopathic, once I got to know them, I never knew her to be wrong.  That’s one reason I always try to post images of my possible psychopaths/sociopaths — I’ll stare at them to see if I can see anything, or see if my subconscious sees anything.

Also note the full court press Quest’s psychopathic partner mounted on his personality.  Long term partners of psychopaths often end up with severely degraded personalities.

Regarding his “sixth sense”, obviously it’s not actually a sixth sense, it’s not a sense that only sharks usually have, it’s not information from a multi-dimensional portal, it’s a turning loose, a turning on of his subconscious’s abilities.  As a trained actor, I very strongly believe the greatest abilities and perceptions are all rooted in the subconscious.  In my own dealing with possible sociopaths, I pay attention to check list items, to behaviors and thought patterns that I consider often sociopathic, to eyes, to a particular type of arrogance and to small behaviors consistent with arrested development and then wait for “a click”, i.e., acknowledgment from my subconscious that yes indeed the particular individual is a sociopath — until then, I don’t “know”, I only suspect.  I do realize that this is against the tradition of the scientific method which states all knowledge is knowable by all, and accessible by following the 4 step nonemotional understanding method — step, 2, 3, understand — however this doesn’t work for dealing with sociopaths.  My recommendation is that we should all work to develop Quest’s sixth sense.

Since my opinions are not based on the scientific method, I understand that I have no proof to offer a third party.  So be it.  I can only offer “flags of possible sociopathy”.  But if someone asked me, “OK, I see those flags.  Are you saying they are proof of sociopathy?”  Me, “No, those plus everything else is the proof.”  I couldn’t even prove that someone was a sociopath to my earlier self.  I would have responded, “Well, I see those behaviors and flags you mention, but why should I believe they mean anything deep, let alone prove of sociopathy?”  My subconscious had no knowledge of sociopathy, no way to translate the cues.

I would predict that many visitors to this blog think that they have never met any sociopaths.  I would bet my 401K this is not true.  Rather most people do not pay any attention to the cues that are actually there.  Once I became aware of sociopaths in my own life and gained some ability to recognize them I realized that I had known quite a few throughout my life.  I am quite confident that all middle-aged visitors who work outside a small family-run business and live in cities have easily known over a dozen sociopaths, sometimes quite a few more.

Since this is a frequent search that finds me and since I’ve only had one image, here are a few others.

Blind Eye: The Terrifying Story Of A Doctor Who Got Away With Murder

Michael Swango: Doctor of Death

Wikipedia entry on Michael Swango

This individual is an extreme example of the “alien masquerading as a human” level psychopath.

I have my own six-degrees-of-separation connection to Dr. Swango.  One of Michael Swango’s waypoints was his conning Alan Miller, M.D.,  into admitting him into a psychiatry training program.  Alan Miller essentially made my father’s career (I met him as my father’s boss during my school years).  His recognition of my father’s talent and his promoting him was what led to my father becoming a state commissioner of mental health himself.  I have both respect and affection for Dr. Miller.

I have seen comments and received one myself that diagnosing psychopaths should be left to psychiatrists.  Yet here, an extremely able and intelligent psychiatrist was unable to recognize Swango as a psychopath.  In my opinion, Michael Swango is immediately recognizable as a psychopath.  There is simply no soul behind his eyes.

Those with eyes can see, those without, cannot.  Western education in general tries to forbid “emotional reading” or “soul sensitivity.”  I can’t see how anything in MD training is of any help in the training of a therapist.  They’d be better off spending the years reading great novels, seeing great plays (or reading them) and movies and then discussing the motivations of the human soul.

The secular soul is that part of the psyche that dreams and never lies, the seat of the deepest wants, desires and instincts.  Psychopaths/sociopaths simply never develop a complex adult soul.  This is reflected in their lives, behavior and even their eyes.

In my opinion, the long criminal career of Dr. Swango represented an egregious failure of both our justice and mental health systems.  There was enough evidence from his early contacts with the law to recognize him as a dangerous psychopath even though there was not enough evidence for a legal win.  He should have faced involuntary commitment as a danger to society criminally insane psychopath.   Obviously this would have depended on publicly witnessed behaviors and checklist type items, not an individual (such as myself) saying ‘well, my subconscious says he’s a psychopath.’  I present that approach simply as a life tool, not as a legal or involuntary commitment tool.

From Profile of the Sociopath:

  • Glibness and Superficial Charm
  • Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.
  • Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as “their right.”
  • Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.
  • Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.
  • Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.
  • Incapacity for Love
  • Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.
  • Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others’ feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.
  • Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.
  • Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet “gets by” by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.
  • Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others’ lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.
  • Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.
  • Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.
  • Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

I should integrate the concept of psychopathic throughlines with the checklist concept.  I’ll add it to my to do list.

In a rough way, I certainly do refer to check lists in my own thinking when considering possible psychopaths/sociopaths.   However it is a mistake to overly rely upon them in my opinion.  It is not possible to successfully follow a reverse engineering cookbook approach — ‘these are the ingredients, so this is the dish.’   I’m not arguing with Dr. Hare’s systemized use of PCL-R with trained raters in a prison setting.  However you will never catch an advanced SAP (socially adept psychopath) with one.  Basically I pay attention to psychopathic levels of arrogance/attitude and look for signs of severe arrested development, i.e., age inappropriate behaviors (even small behaviors), childish thinking patterns, etc.

Checklists can rise to the fore again however, when dealing with SAPs.  If behavior falls apart ( the “adult act” of psychopaths) under certain situations, checklist items can be of great help in recognizing psychopaths.  At one bank I worked at, we had a managing director who was ordered never to attend company parties, his behavior fell apart under the influence of alcohol.  (For those unfamiliar with corporate structure, managing directors are essentially standalone profit centers, they have to be rainmakers (profit-wise) for the company.)  This individual was widely considered to be a wild and crazy, fun guy.  Or sometimes psychopathic individuals will show their true character based on “food chain calculations” — when dealing with those they deem lower, their “inner psychopath” comes out; or when deeming themselves at the top of the food chain, the same occurs.

[A version of the first of the two above paragraphs was here earlier.  I have no idea what happened, perhaps I failed to save it correctly, perhaps there was a technical glitch, or perhaps . . . EGADS!  HAVE I BEEN GASLIGHTED BY A PSYCHOPATHIC HACKER?  “Why no, PW, whatever paragraph are you talking about.  You’ve been so stressed out lately, etc., etc.”  Psychopaths just love gaslighting campaigns, it gives them the “chortle, chortle” response that they cherish.  Gaslighting depends on the target not entertaining seemingly paranoid lines of thought.  Incidentally, I see my external links have disappeared.  I don’t know how that happened.]

At the bottom of the above factsheet, the author says “You may also find more at http://sociopathworld.com/.”  You certainly will, it is a psychopath website.

Finally the author says, “I . . . am not a psychologist and [claim] no special expertise in the subject.”  IMO, no special expertise is needed, or rather, anyone who has had intense emotional experiences with psychopaths does have special expertise.  Everyone needs to know psychopaths are out there and that they will interact with them.  If the so-called experts don’t tell us this, we have to inform each other.

Just came across another worthy checklist site:  The List of Psychopathy Symptoms: Hervey Cleckley and Robert Hare
